Historic Macon Foundation became the regional leader in historic preservation on July 31, 2003, with the merger of the Middle Georgia Historical Society and the Macon Heritage Foundation. The goal of the merger is to create a stronger, more efficient and effective voice for historic preservation in Middle Georgia. The mission of Historic Macon Foundation includes: educating the greater Macon, Georgia community about its history and historic preservation; preserving and restoring historic buildings, sites and neighborhoods; and maintaining and promoting the Sidney Lanier Cottage House Museum, built in 1840 and birthplace of the noted poet, musician, and soldier Sidney Lanier (1842-1881). In addition, the Foundation may undertake and carry on such other businesses, enterprises and pursuits consistent with its purposes as herein expressed as may from time to time seem desirable to its Board of Trustees and/or its members.
