About Us

In 2000, Georgia Power and Fantus Corporation identified Macon as one of the top three communities in Georgia with significant growth potential. As a result, an Executive Community Assessment was conducted to evaluate the city and identify potential issues. The assessment found that Macon had success with maintaining existing industry, but lacked a unified economic development strategy and sufficient city marketing.

In response, a team of volunteers met in 2004 to begin work on a plan that would take Macon’s existing business, industry, and recruitment of new business to a new level of success. As a direct result of their efforts, the Macon NOW! campaign emerged in 2005 as a five-year, three-fold initiative aimed at understanding the needs of existing businesses and industries, increasing visibility in target industries, and developing  a comprehensive image campaign to position Macon as a dynamic and vibrant community in the minds of the citizens of Macon, Bibb County, and Middle Georgia.

The “Macon. Discover It.” program is the implementation strategy for the image campaign, the final initiative of the Macon NOW! campaign. In November and December of 2006, the Greater Macon Chamber of Commerce hosted a series of thirteen focus groups in various sectors of Macon which were conducted by two Mercer Marketing professors. Under the direction of the marketing professors, the information collected from these discussions was used to compile a survey; this survey was used in intercept interviews both over the phone and outside of various supermarkets.

The themes of the “Macon. Discover It.” campaign directly correlate with the research findings; for example, Macon residents feel the most positively about the following five topics: Music, History/Heritage, Colleges/Universities, Macon’s central location in the state, and the neighborhoods/small town feel. The research also showed which areas of Macon feel the most connected and disconnected to the community as a whole. The neighborhoods which ranked Macon the highest were the communities that felt the most connected to Macon and were the most engaged.

“The Macon. Discover It.” campaign is a community image campaign about Macon for the people of Macon. “Macon. Discover It.” poses an active challenge to the community to get involved and see what Macon has to offer its citizens, so discover Macon and enjoy!
