The historic Capitol Theatre first opened its doors in downtown Macon on November 10, 1916 and introduced fascinated audiences to the drama and glamour of the silver screen. From silent movies to talkies, the theatre had a successful run and provided quality entertainment for 60 years. The stage went dark in 1976 until a revival of enthusiasm by local movie and history buffs spurred the restoration and reopening of this classic venue in January 2006. The Cox Capitol Theatre is once again a popular gathering place for the Macon community and our visitors. Proceeds from movies and special events help support and sustain the ongoing effort to preserve and protect the magnificent architectural treasure, now operating as a non-profit 501 (c) (3). The theatre is also available for private or corporate day/evening rentals.
